Invasive Ivy Clean Up

  • Mon, January 15, 2018
  • 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • The Point, 18th and Shepherd St

A recent survey of the neighborhood by the Crestwood Green Team found invasive ivy growing on trees in our alleys and in parts of Rock Creek Park bordering Crestwood.

SO?
English ivy is invasive.  It spreads rapidly, can weaken and strangle trees, accelerate rot, is a terrible allergen in the Spring, and in the Summer months attract mosquitoes.

WHAT TO DO?
The Green Team is planning to enlist and train volunteers to properly remove unwanted ivy by cutting a 2-foot band of the ivy at the base of affected trees.  The ivy will then die on the tree.  One team will work in the Park and one in our Alleys.

WHEN?
MLK Jr Holiday, this Monday, January 15th, from 10am to 12pm.

WHERE?
Volunteers will meet at “The Point” - the section of Rock Creek Park at the intersection of 18th St and Shepherd St.

WHAT TO WEAR?
Please dress appropriately for the weather. Layers and a hat to prevent exposure to the cold is recommended. Wear sturdy boots or sneakers, no sandals. We recommend long pants and sleeves to prevent potential contact with poison ivy.

WHAT TO BRING?
Bring water. Tools and gloves will be provided. Feel free to bring your own tools and gloves if you have them. Students can earn SSL hours, but please bring needed forms.

WHAT IF IT'S BAD WEATHER?
If it is raining/snowing or there is snow on the ground, it will be canceled.

HOW TO REGISTER:
Volunteers can register at: http://publicevents.force.com/Public_Event_Signup_Page?cid=701700000015yaj
Volunteers can also just show up at 10am.  Please be on-time so that the training can serve everyone's needs.
